How the match unfolded
Newcastle started with intent through Harvey Barnes, who whipped one early delivery inches wide of Jordan Pickford's far post. In the 16th minute James Tarkowski blocked a Joelinton shot on the turn, and Dan Burn headed the resulting corner off target.
Everton grew into the half. Merlin Röhl drove a first-time shot over the bar, and Barry failed to make a clean connection seven yards out after Jarrad Branthwaite headed a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall free-kick into his path. Joelinton sent a 20-yard effort narrowly wide for the hosts, and in first-half stoppage time Harrison Armstrong screwed a cut-back from Dewsbury-Hall wide from 12 yards.
The breakthrough came four minutes after the restart. James Garner slid Tyrique George through the left channel, his low shot squeezed under goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček, and Barry tapped in from a yard out. It was Barry's eighth goal of the season in all competitions, after he had also scored in Thursday's cup tie.
Horníček then kept the score down, turning over a Branthwaite header and saving from Dewsbury-Hall and Jake O'Brien. Matthias Jaissle sent on Yoane Wissa and Sean Steur on 64 minutes, followed by Ramsey and Jacob Murphy. Newcastle's best chance came when Anthony Elanga, at the back post, could not force the ball over the line, and Ramsey volleyed inches wide with 11 minutes left.
Pickford used his legs to deny Wissa in the closing stages. Everton also had a late penalty appeal for a challenge by Fabian Schär on Barry, but the video assistant referee backed referee John Brooks' decision not to award it. Ramsey was booked in the sixth minute of added time, and 84 seconds later he caught Armstrong above the ankle and was shown a second yellow card.
What does the result mean for both clubs?
Everton ended a three-game winless run in the Premier League and moved up to seventh on 13 points. They have now beaten Newcastle twice in a week after their 3-1 Carabao Cup win at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday, which followed a 2-0 league defeat at Arsenal. Jack Grealish was again absent from David Moyes' squad.
Newcastle missed the chance to climb into the top half and drop to 13th on 11 points. They were booed off at the final whistle.
