How the match unfolded
David Moyes made two changes from the side beaten at Arsenal, bringing in Hackney and Tyler Dibling for Harrison Armstrong and Brennan Johnson. Everton said before kick-off that Grealish, on loan from Manchester City, was unavailable for selection due to a breach of club discipline. Sky Sports reported that he had missed a training session. Jarrad Branthwaite stayed out under concussion protocols.
Newcastle started the brighter side. In the 12th minute Harvey Barnes got in behind Merlin Röhl, but Jordan Pickford saved his header. Everton went ahead with their first proper shot on target in the 34th minute. Tyrique George pressed Amar Dedic into losing the ball near the corner flag, Hackney found Garner and the midfielder curled a low shot into the far corner for his first goal since January.
The second goal came on the stroke of half-time. Pickford collected a deflected Barnes effort and set Everton away, the referee played advantage after a foul on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Barry crossed for Hackney to finish from close range. It was Hackney's first Everton goal in only his third start since his summer move from Middlesbrough. He was booked after the break and replaced by Armstrong.
Barry settled the tie in the 69th minute. Garner fed Dewsbury-Hall down the left and his cut-back found the striker unmarked in the box. Burn headed in Joe Willock's cross two minutes from time, and he, Joelinton and James Tarkowski were all booked after a scuffle that followed.
What does the win mean for Everton?
Everton travel to League Two Fleetwood Town, who knocked out Arsenal on penalties on Tuesday, in the last eight. Everton have never won the League Cup, and their last trophy was the 1995 FA Cup. The other quarter-finals are Crystal Palace v Sunderland, Liverpool v Bournemouth and Manchester City v Bradford City.
For Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle, it ends a run of four straight seasons reaching the quarter-finals.
