How the match unfolded

Enzo Maresca recalled several regulars after the midweek cup tie but left Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden and Marc Guéhi on the bench, starting Elliot Anderson, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Enzo Fernández in midfield.

Brighton struck in the 11th minute. Lewis Dunk played a free-kick to Diego Gómez on the right, and when Matheus Nunes missed his attempted clearance of Gómez's low cross, the ball came off Maxim De Cuyper into the path of Ayari, who tapped in from close range. De Cuyper was credited with the assist. The Guardian reported that the free-kick had been wrongly awarded against Anderson for a foul on Ayari.

City dominated the rest of the half. Iliman Ndiaye headed Anderson's cross wide from a good position and then forced Bart Verbruggen into a save at his near post. Referee Craig Pawson turned down several City appeals for handball, while Gianluigi Donnarumma saved from Gómez at the other end.

Brighton should have doubled their lead just after the restart, but De Cuyper fired over from close range. He was booked soon afterwards and later had a header saved by Donnarumma.

Cherki replaced Bouaddi in the 55th minute and City stepped up the pressure. Verbruggen saved from Nunes just after the hour, dealt with an Erling Haaland header and pushed a powerful Ndiaye strike onto the woodwork.

Brighton defended deep in the closing stages. Substitute Jack Hinshelwood shot wide on a counter-attack set up by Georginio Rutter, and in the final minutes substitute Nico O'Reilly headed wide of the post with the goal at his mercy. City finished with 21 shots, but Verbruggen made seven saves and Brighton held on.

What does the result mean?

City stay top on 21 points from nine games, level with Arsenal, who have a game in hand and visit Liverpool on Sunday (16:30 UK). Maresca's side had won their first seven league games before losing 2-1 at Aston Villa last weekend. According to BBC Sport, this was the first time in 25 Premier League matches that City failed to score.

"We created a lot of chances. Disappointing to lose," Anderson told the club's website. "We've had a great start to the season, two disappointing results now but we have to stick together."

Brighton move to 19 points in third place, two points off the top. Fabian Hürzeler's side bounced back from a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool and from Wednesday's shootout exit at the Etihad, where Ayari and Dunk both missed penalties. Ayari's goal was his third in the league this season.

Sky Sports noted that Brighton have kept a clean sheet in each of their last five league wins and now have a club-record points total at this stage of a top-flight season. More results are in our Premier League section.
