How the match unfolded
Before kick-off, Harry Kane paraded his Ballon d'Or in front of the home crowd. Bayern were again led by assistant coach Aaron Danks, with Vincent Kompany kept away from the game while he recovers following his hospitalisation last week.
Michael Olise hit the post in the 10th minute, but Bayern's evening was disrupted by two early injuries. Ismael Saibari went off in the 29th minute, replaced by Nathaniel Brown, and Serge Gnabry followed two minutes later, with Josip Stanišić coming on.
Dortmund thought they had taken the lead in the 34th minute when Jobe Bellingham pounced on a loose ball, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review for Carney Chukwuemeka's collision with goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. Four minutes later Bayern scored instead. Olise played in Konrad Laimer, Gregor Kobel saved his first effort and Laimer turned in the rebound.
Kane had a chance to double the lead in the 56th minute after Felix Nmecha handled his volley in the box, but the England captain struck the crossbar from the spot. Dortmund equalised four minutes later, when Chukwuemeka found Serhou Guirassy and the striker drove a low left-footed shot past Urbig.
Bayern went back in front in the 66th minute. After a corner, Kane headed Joshua Kimmich's cross back across goal and Dayot Upamecano finished from close range. Niko Kovač sent on Marcel Sabitzer and Konstantinos Karetsas straight away, then Fábio Silva for Nmecha in the 76th minute. Olise was forced off in the 84th minute, replaced by Lennart Karl.
The changes paid off a minute from time. Karetsas charged down Aleksandar Pavlović's attempted clearance and Silva turned to send a low right-footed shot into the far corner. Bayern pushed through four minutes of added time but could not find a winner.
What does the draw mean for the title race?
Both sides started the night level on 17 points, so a winner would have gone top alone. Instead Bayern stay first on goal difference, with Dortmund second and Freiburg third on 16 points.
Dortmund arrived with the league's best defence, having conceded four goals in seven games, and twice recovered from a goal down in Munich. Kovač's side remain unbeaten in the league, following last weekend's 1-0 home win over Eintracht Frankfurt. For Bayern, who had won 3-1 at Freiburg last time out, Kane's missed penalty proved costly.
What happens next?
Bayern visit Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday after losing Saibari, Gnabry and Olise to injury during the game. Dortmund host Real Betis the following night. Both return to league action on 7 November against the two sides from Saturday's Elversberg 4-1 Mainz result. More results are in our Bundesliga section.
