Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-1 win at SC Freiburg on Sunday, without head coach Vincent Kompany, who was taken to hospital after collapsing at training on Friday. Dayot Upamecano and Serge Gnabry, with his 100th Bundesliga goal, put stand-in Aaron Danks' side two up by half-time. Freiburg pulled one back through a Tom Bischof own goal before Michael Olise sealed it in stoppage time.

How the match unfolded
Kompany collapsed while watching a reserve-team training session. Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said on Saturday that the Belgian was stable but could be out for weeks. Assistant coach Danks took charge, with Jonas Urbig in goal for Manuel Neuer, and Joshua Kimmich, Luis Díaz, Aleksandar Pavlović and Kim Min-jae also missing.
Bayern led in the 16th minute. Upamecano won the ball on the edge of his own box, played a one-two with Olise and raced clear before finishing past Mio Backhaus in a one-on-one. Lucas Höler was booked for a foul on Bischof, and Backhaus kept out efforts from Olise and Nathaniel Brown.
Three minutes before the break, Gnabry played in Brown, collected the return pass and finished coolly for 2-0. According to Opta, it was his 100th Bundesliga goal, in his 267th game.
Urbig saved early second-half shots from Derry Scherhant and substitute Igor Matanović, while Niklas Beste and Jonathan Tah were booked. Bayern could have put the game away, but Backhaus stopped substitute Ismael Saibari's attempt to round him in the 75th minute and then saved from Harry Kane and Saibari again in the 81st.
A minute later, substitute Vincenzo Grifo's low cross from the left was turned into his own net by Bischof, and Freiburg pushed hard for an equaliser. Matanović headed straight at Urbig, and in stoppage time Urbig produced a superb save to keep out Matthias Ginter's header from a corner. With Freiburg committing players forward, Backhaus was caught high up the pitch and lost the ball to Olise in the fifth added minute, and the France winger rolled it into the empty net from outside the box.
What it means
The win, after the 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal in midweek, lifts Bayern to 17 points. They are level with Borussia Dortmund and ahead on goal difference, having last been top after the 6-1 win over RB Leipzig.
Julian Schuster's Freiburg have now lost three in a row in all competitions, following the 2-1 defeat at Leverkusen and a 3-0 loss at Monaco in the Conference League. They stay third on 13 points.
What's next
Both clubs are in DFB Cup second-round action at home on Wednesday. Bayern then host Dortmund in Der Klassiker on Saturday, with Eberl setting no date for Kompany's return. "He'll only come back when he's fit," he said.
