How the match unfolded

Bayern, with Jonas Urbig in goal in place of the absent Manuel Neuer, controlled the game from the start, and Maarten Vandevoordt had to save an early long-range effort from Kane. In the 12th minute Joshua Kimmich's ball over the Leipzig defence sent Díaz clear, and the Colombian finished into the bottom corner.

Vandevoordt kept out a powerful shot from Dayot Upamecano, but in the 26th minute Díaz turned provider, setting up Pavlović to fire in at the near post from a tight angle on the left. In the 29th minute the Leipzig goalkeeper turned Olise's low shot onto the post, yet five minutes later a quick move involving Konrad Laimer and Kane ended with Olise firing a left-footed shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.

Demichelis made two changes at half-time, sending on Tidiam Gomis and Nicolas Seiwald for Christopher Nkunku and Ezechiel Banzuzi, but Bayern scored again within two minutes of the restart. Kane released Díaz, who ran at Lukas Klostermann and curled his second goal into the far corner in the 47th minute.

In the 53rd minute Díaz sent Nathaniel Brown away down the left, and Brown's cut-back left Kane to tap in from close range. It was his 102nd goal in 100 Bundesliga games. Kane was among four Bayern players replaced just before the hour.

Díaz completed his hat-trick in the 69th minute. Moments after Vandevoordt had saved from substitute Tom Bischof, Kimmich took the resulting corner short and Olise laid the ball off for Díaz to strike a right-footed shot from the edge of the area into the bottom corner.

Olise almost made it seven in the 75th minute, but Vandevoordt pushed his close-range effort from Josip Stanišić's cross onto the crossbar. Leipzig did not test Urbig until the 78th minute, when he saved from David Raum. Maksimović, on as a 71st-minute substitute, finally beat the Bayern goalkeeper a minute into stoppage time, finishing Brajan Gruda's pass with a left-footed shot from the centre of the box.

Bayern finished with 17 shots on target to Leipzig's four, and Vandevoordt made 11 saves.

Bayern back on top

The win ends a two-game run without a victory for Bayern after a 2-2 draw at Augsburg and the 3-3 draw at Viking in the Champions League. They move to 14 points and top the table on goal difference from Borussia Dortmund, who were held 0-0 at Union Berlin earlier on Saturday. Freiburg, a point behind with a game in hand, can go two points clear if they beat Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.

Leipzig had won all three of their home league games before kick-off, as our Bayern v Leipzig preview noted, but they have now lost all three away from home and drop to seventh on nine points.

What happens next

Bayern host Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday (20:00 UK) and then travel to Freiburg on Sunday 25 October. Leipzig are also in Champions League action on Wednesday, away to Real Madrid at the Bernabéu (20:00 UK).
