How the match unfolded
Both sides started the night on 10 points. Elversberg coach Vincent Wagner made five changes after his side's midweek DFB Cup exit against Darmstadt, while Robin Zentner returned in goal for Mainz for the first time since Matchday 3.
Elversberg took control from the start. In the seventh minute Keidel curled a free-kick from just outside the box past the Mainz wall and into the corner. In the 26th minute David Mokwa drove through midfield and set up Francis Onyeka, whose shot went in under Zentner for his first Bundesliga goal.
Mainz won a run of corners but created little. In first-half stoppage time Zentner could only partly clear a Keidel corner, and Maurice Krattenmacher beat Nadiem Amiri and Paul Nebel before finishing low into the far corner to make it 3-0.
Mainz coach Urs Fischer made four changes in the 63rd minute, sending on Hollerbach, Silvan Widmer, Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer and Lennard Maloney. Three minutes later Königsdörffer chipped the ball past Nicolas Kristof, but VAR ruled the goal out for a tight offside. Zentner later denied Mokwa when he ran through alone.
A minute into stoppage time substitute Campbell controlled Nicholas Mickelson's cross on his chest and scored with a scissor kick at the near post. Hollerbach pulled one back from close range a minute later after a pass from Königsdörffer, and Posch was sent off for a second yellow card five minutes into stoppage time.
What does the win mean for Elversberg?
Elversberg move on to 13 points, which Sportschau reported is the best record by a promoted side after eight matchdays since RB Leipzig. Fans voted Keidel Man of the Match, and the Bundesliga said no other player in the league has scored more direct free-kicks this season than his two.
"I'm glad that we played the third game of this English week very well in terms of content, with the only difference being that we were rewarded today," Wagner told the club's website. Elversberg visit Borussia Dortmund next, after BVB beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 last weekend.
What happens next for Mainz?
Mainz stay on 10 points after defeats by Werder Bremen, Bochum in the DFB Cup and Elversberg, conceding nine goals in the three games. "That had nothing to do with the Bundesliga," captain Widmer told Sportschau. Fischer said the problems would be addressed internally. Posch will miss the home game against Bayern Munich, who beat RB Leipzig 6-1 earlier this month. More results are in our Bundesliga section.
