How the match unfolded

United, with Bruno Fernandes back in the side as captain, had the better of an open first half. Estêvão had the ball in the net for Chelsea in the 14th minute, converting a rebound after Senne Lammens saved from Pedro Neto, but the flag was up for offside.

Fernandes then fired high over the bar from Bryan Mbeumo's pass on a quick break, and Mike Penders twice denied Amad Diallo. In the 34th minute Matheus Cunha turned in Harry Maguire's header from a corner, only for a VAR review to rule the goal out for offside. Moisés Caicedo hit the base of the post from an Estêvão corner, and Amad lifted a one-on-one chance over the bar after a Wesley Fofana error.

Chelsea scored five minutes after the restart. Roméo Lavia won the ball in midfield and found Rogers, who ran at the United defence from around 35 yards, went past Maguire and Martínez and lifted the ball over Lammens.

Martínez was booked in the 59th minute for a foul on Rogers. Minutes later, as an Estêvão corner came in, he led with his arm into Fofana's face. Referee Peter Bankes went to the pitchside monitor after a VAR review, awarded a penalty and showed Martínez a second yellow card. Palmer's spot-kick in the 64th minute squeezed past Lammens, who got his hands to it.

Estêvão thought he had made it 3-0 after 71 minutes with a shot into the roof of the net, but a delayed VAR check ruled it out for a marginal offside. In the 10 minutes of stoppage time, Penders got a touch to Mbeumo's 20-yard strike, which hit the crossbar, to keep his clean sheet.

What does the result mean for Chelsea?

Xabi Alonso made four changes after a midweek Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool and a 2-0 home league loss to Tottenham, when Penders scored an own goal and Palmer was sent off. Palmer returned from his one-match ban, and Marco Palestra made his first Premier League start.

The win lifts Chelsea to fourth on 16 points, level with third-placed Brighton for now, ahead of a trip to Sunderland next Sunday.

What next for Michael Carrick and United?

United have seven points from nine league games and sit 16th, one point above the relegation zone, with other teams still to play this weekend. It was their third defeat in a row, after last weekend's 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, and ESPN reported it is United's first nine-game winless run since 1988-89.

Martínez was making only his second start since he criticised the club's hierarchy earlier this month. Carrick, who heard home supporters chant that he would be sacked, now prepares for Roma's visit to Old Trafford on Tuesday. More results are in our Premier League section.
