Tottenham Hotspur won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, their first victory at Chelsea in eight years, after a 77th-minute own goal by goalkeeper Mike Penders, a red card for Cole Palmer and a superb solo strike from Mathys Tel. How the match unfolded
Heavy rain from Storm Boelo soaked west London before kick-off, and Xabi Alonso made two changes. Penders, 21, made his first Premier League start in place of Emiliano Martínez, who had jaw surgery after the win at Everton. João Pedro missed out after feeling something in training on Friday, so Geovany Quenda made his first top-flight start.
Roberto De Zerbi's side controlled most of the first half. Antonín Kinský tipped away an early first-time strike from Palmer, but the clearest chance fell to Tottenham: Andy Robertson's cut-back found Omar Marmoush free on the penalty spot, and he shot straight at Penders. Kinský later made a double save from Jordan Henderson and Pedro Neto after his own loose pass, although Neto was flagged offside.
Tottenham lost James Maddison to injury early in the second half. Conor Gallagher replaced him and was booed by the home fans. The game then flared up around the 70th minute. Mateus Fernandes handled while falling to stop a Palmer run, Palmer knocked him over as he got up, and players and staff from both benches got involved. Palmer, Fernandes and Micky van de Ven were booked, and De Zerbi was also cautioned.
The breakthrough came from a set piece in the 77th minute. Fernandes swung in a corner from the left, and Penders, under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke, punched it backwards into his own net. BBC Sport said he is only the second Chelsea goalkeeper to score a Premier League own goal, after Petr Čech against Everton in December 2009. Three minutes later Palmer went in late on Gallagher just outside the Chelsea area and was shown a second yellow card by referee Chris Kavanagh.
With three minutes of normal time left, Tel won the ball in his own half on the left, ran past Josh Acheampong and Maxence Lacroix and drove a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Morgan Rogers was booked for a foul on Gallagher in the seven minutes of stoppage time.
What it means
Tottenham have now won back-to-back league games after the 3-1 win over Coventry and climb to 12th on nine points. According to BBC Sport, Spurs had 69 per cent of the ball and 15 shots to Chelsea's seven. Tel told Sky Sports the win was special "because we have come to Chelsea so many times and not got a win".
Chelsea stay fourth on 13 points, but the loss halts the momentum from wins over Bournemouth and the 2-0 victory at Everton. They have now conceded eight Premier League goals from set pieces this season, double any other side, BBC Sport reported. Earlier on Saturday, leaders Manchester City lost 2-1 at Aston Villa.
What's next
Chelsea visit Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before hosting Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday 31 October (12:30 UK). Tottenham's next game is at home to Crystal Palace that evening.
