How the match unfolded
Mainz started brightly in the 14:30 UK kick-off, but Bayern soon took control of the ball and punished the first mistake. In the 14th minute Jae-Sung Lee's pass missed Danny da Costa, Kane laid the ball off and Kimmich drilled a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top corner.
Robin Zentner kept Mainz in the game. He saved Nathaniel Brown's volley at the back post in the 18th minute, held a Dayot Upamecano header a minute later and closed down a Kane chip in the 38th.
Mainz thought they had equalised shortly before half-time when Neuer missed a free-kick into the box and Lee headed into the empty net, but a VAR review found Lee offside. Neuer was hurt in the same action, needed treatment on his right foot and was replaced by Jonas Urbig in the 45th minute.
Bayern doubled their lead in the 57th minute. A ball in behind found Kane, whose shot was blocked, and he poked the loose ball across for Karl to finish from close range.
Mainz coach Urs Fischer sent on Paul Nebel and Tietz in the 63rd minute, and Bayern replaced Josip Stanišić and Karl with Alphonso Davies and Tom Bischof four minutes later. Benedict Hollerbach volleyed over for Mainz in the 80th minute, and Upamecano headed against the bar in the 87th.
Mainz finally beat Urbig three minutes into stoppage time, when Tietz headed in Hollerbach's cross for their first shot on target of the afternoon. It came too late to change the result.
What does the result mean for Bayern Munich?
Bayern, led by assistant Aaron Danks while Vincent Kompany recovers from the illness that put him in hospital last month, move to 21 points and remain unbeaten in the league this season. Their previous Bundesliga game was the 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
Kane's two assists took him to seven in the league this season, the most in the Bundesliga, in the week he extended his contract until 2029. The worry is Neuer, who had only just returned from a foot problem that kept him out of three games.
Mainz stay on 10 points, a week after their 4-1 defeat at Elversberg.
What happens next?
The Bundesliga now pauses for the international break. Bayern host 1. FC Köln on Friday 20 November (19:30 UK), and Mainz visit FC Augsburg on Sunday 22 November (14:30 UK). More reports from the round, including Hamburg's 3-1 win over Gladbach, are in our Bundesliga section.
