Hamburg 3-1 Gladbach: Muheim rocket and Grønbæk seal win

Miro Muheim leaps in celebration in Hamburg's white kit after scoring against Gladbach

Miro Muheim and Albert Grønbæk both scored spectacular long-range goals as Hamburger SV beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 on Friday night, after Kō Itakura's red card left Gladbach with ten men for most of the second half.

Match facts

  • Result: Hamburg 3-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach (half-time 1-1)
  • Competition: Bundesliga, Matchday 9
  • Venue: Volksparkstadion, Hamburg
  • Scorers: Hamburg - Muheim 11', Nandja 60', Grønbæk 70'; Borussia Mönchengladbach - Scally 44'
  • Red cards: Itakura (Borussia Mönchengladbach) 49', second yellow
  • Next: International break; both clubs return for the next Bundesliga matchday

How the match unfolded

Gladbach threatened early, with Shuto Machino firing over inside four minutes. Hamburg then struck from distance on 11 minutes: Albert Sambi Lokonga found Muheim, and the full-back lashed a measured 30-metre strike into the bottom corner — clocked at 129.43 km/h, the fastest Bundesliga goal of the season so far.

Daniel Batz made several saves to keep Gladbach in the contest before Joe Scally levelled on the stroke of half-time, his shot deflecting in after a Lukas Ullrich cross was only half-cleared.

Three minutes into the second half Itakura brought down David Møller Wolfe near halfway and received a second yellow card. Hamburg made the numerical advantage count on 60 minutes when Grønbæk threaded a pass into the box and Shafiq Nandja drilled past Batz.

Grønbæk then sealed the win in the 70th minute, rifling a long-range effort into the top corner after Gladbach failed to clear. Patson Daka and others pressed for a fourth, but the score stayed 3-1.

Hamburg made three changes from their defeat in Frankfurt, with Sebastiaan Bornauw, Zakaria El Ouahdi and Patson Daka returning to the starting XI. Gladbach brought Itakura into the back three for the injured Daiki Hashioka. Teenager Wael Mohya, called up to the senior Germany squad for the first time this week, was lively for the visitors throughout.

What the result means

The victory rewarded Hamburg's aggression after the red card and gave Grønbæk a man-of-the-match night with a goal and an assist. Gladbach, who had brought Itakura back for his first start in seven weeks, paid for the dismissal and left Hamburg with nothing from a Friday night trip north.

Bundesliga.com listed the xG at Hamburg 1.90 – Gladbach 1.86, underlining how fine the margins were before the sending-off tilted the game. Both sides head into the international break with the next league fixtures after the pause.
