How the match unfolded
Adi Hütter's side started the day with only eight points from seven games, their weakest return at this stage for five years, and they began quickly. Can Uzun shot just wide in the fifth minute and Daniel Heuer Fernandes saved from Ebnoutalib soon afterwards.
Frankfurt went ahead in the 10th minute. Uzun sent Farès Chaïbi through, and Chaïbi's low ball across goal was turned into his own net by Warmed Omari under pressure from Ebnoutalib. Hamburger SV hit back four minutes later: Lilian Brassier failed to clear Miro Muheim's cross from the left, and Albert Grønbæk laid the ball across for Terem Moffi to finish from close range. Heuer Fernandes kept the score level before the break with a save from a Robin Koch header.
Frankfurt led again two minutes after the restart. Brassier headed Chaïbi's corner towards goal, Heuer Fernandes could only push it out, and Onyedika bundled in the rebound for his first goal for the club. In the 62nd minute Chaïbi had the ball in the net again, but the goal was ruled out after a video review because half-time substitute Ansgar Knauff had been offside in the build-up.
The third goal came in the 69th minute. Uzun won the ball in midfield, ran at the Hamburger SV defence and slipped Ebnoutalib through to finish. Heuer Fernandes then tipped a curling Chaïbi shot away from the top corner in the 75th minute.
Merlin Polzin's side pushed in the closing stages. Omari headed against the crossbar in the 89th minute, and Noah Atubolu saved from substitute Otto Stange. Iličević replaced Uzun in stoppage time, a day after his 16th birthday, to equal the record Youssoufa Moukoko set for Borussia Dortmund in November 2020.
What does the result mean?
The win lifts Frankfurt to eighth on 11 points after last weekend's 1-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund. Ebnoutalib, who scored the winner in the 1-0 home win over 1. FC Köln last month, was again decisive.
Hamburger SV, who were without defender Sebastiaan Bornauw, stay 15th on nine points after their fifth league defeat of the season. Heuer Fernandes was voted Player of the Match by fans despite conceding three, and told NDR he was frustrated because his side could have taken more from the game.
What happens next?
Hamburger SV host bottom club Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday night, and Frankfurt travel to SC Paderborn on Saturday, the last round before the November international break. Elsewhere on Matchday 8, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund drew 2-2. More results are in our Bundesliga section.
