How the match unfolded
Getafe had the first chance when Unai Simón saved a low shot from Ramón Terrats in the fifth minute, and Nemanja Gudelj headed wide from a corner ten minutes later. Athletic struck soon after. Nico Williams won a free kick and, in the 17th minute, Berenguer struck it with his right foot into the bottom corner.
Athletic lost Íñigo Ruiz de Galarreta to injury a minute later, with Beñat Gerenabarrena coming on. Iñaki Williams had a shot blocked and fired over before doubling the lead in the 35th minute, finishing Berenguer's pass with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box. Terrats and Dani Carvajal were booked before the break.
José Bordalás made two changes at half-time, sending on Saba Sazonov and Andrés García, and Iván Azón headed wide early in the second half. Johan Mojica was booked in the 63rd minute and later went off injured.
Terzić replaced Nico Williams and Maroan Sannadi with Christian Imga and Alejandro Rego in the 68th minute, and two minutes later the game was settled. Berenguer delivered a corner and Paredes headed into the centre of the goal for 3-0. Bordalás responded with a triple change, bringing on Borja Mayoral, Enes Ünal and Davinchi, and Ünal sent a free kick just wide.
Mario Martín was shown a straight red card in the 86th minute after fouling Gerenabarrena. Two minutes later Berenguer set up his third goal of the afternoon from a free kick, and Yuri Berchiche drove a low left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom corner.
What it means
The win was Athletic's first in the league since they beat Atlético Madrid 3-0 at San Mamés on 5 September. It followed draws with Elche, Alavés and Valencia and Wednesday's 3-1 defeat at Levante, and took Terzić's side to 12 points from nine games. They have a game in hand on several of the sides around them after their match at Rayo Vallecano was abandoned during a fans' protest earlier this month.
Getafe are 17th with nine points from ten games and have not scored away from home in the league this season, a run that includes a 3-0 defeat at Barcelona. Bordalás's side came into the game after a 1-1 draw with Rayo at the Coliseum and a 5-2 home defeat by Lugano in the Conference League on Thursday.
Both teams are in Copa del Rey action on Thursday before returning to the league next Sunday, when Athletic host Real Sociedad in the Basque derby and Getafe welcome Sevilla.
