How the match unfolded
The first half at the Penzo was tight and goalless. Venezia threatened early when Antoine Hainaut was denied by Maduka Okoye, and Pasquale Mazzocchi whistled a shot just wide from the edge of the area. Udinese grew into the contest: Jurgen Ekkelenkamp forced a diving save from Filip Stanković, and Keinan Davis struck the woodwork from close range amid an offside flag.
After the break Davis again went clean through, only for Stanković to make a vital save. Venezia then took the lead on 53 minutes. Hainaut drove to the byline and cut the ball back for Bašić, whose angled finish beat Okoye for 1-0.
Udinese levelled four minutes later. Nicolò Zaniolo's cross from the right was kept alive and Venezia defender Matías Moreno diverted the ball into his own net. The goal stood after a lengthy VAR check on Zaniolo's position.
Venezia went back in front on 65 minutes with the goal of the night. Kike Pérez collected from Mazzocchi and bent a left-footed strike into the top corner from the edge of the area to make it 2-1. Paolo Zanetti, on his first match in charge of Udinese, introduced late attackers including Lennon Miller and Vakoun Bayo, but Venezia held on for a second home win under Davide Nicola.
What does the result mean in the table?
Venezia move to 19th on six points from 11 matches and, for the first time since mid-August, are no longer bottom. Udinese drop to 20th on five points and have now lost eight of their last nine league games, including this first outing under Zanetti. The international break arrives at a useful moment for both survival campaigns.
Serie A coverage elsewhere includes Juventus 2-0 Napoli and Atalanta 0-3 Parma; more reports sit on the Serie A page.
Why the bottom clash mattered
Three points in a direct duel between the bottom two change the survival picture before the pause. Nicola's side had gone three games without a goal before Friday; Bašić's opener and Pérez's curler restore belief at the Penzo. Udinese remain deep in trouble and must use the break to reset under their new coach.
