How the match unfolded

Barcelona lost Xavi Espart to injury on the half-hour, with Alejandro Balde replacing him. Real Madrid went ahead in the 41st minute with a fortunate goal: Gerard Martín's attempted clearance of Yan Diomande's low cross struck Mbappé and beat Joan García.

The game opened up before the break. Mbappé hit the post, and at the other end Lamine Yamal side-footed wide from close range.

Hansi Flick's side levelled in the 61st minute. After a corner, captain Raphinha collected Pedri's pass and shot through Jude Bellingham's legs into the far corner. Moments later Andriy Lunin clawed away a Martín header one-handed, a save BBC Sport described as pivotal. Madrid then lost Federico Valverde to injury, with Denzel Dumfries coming on.

With three minutes of normal time left, Bellingham's skill on halfway released substitute Eduardo Camavinga, who broke forward and squared for Mbappé to finish into an unguarded net. Mourinho celebrated with a knee slide by the dugout.

What it means

Barcelona had won all nine league games, following their 5-2 win at Real Betis, and were chasing an outright Spanish top-flight record for consecutive wins from the start of a season. Instead they stay on 27 points, two ahead of Atlético Madrid, with Real Madrid third on 24.

ESPN reported that the winner was Mbappé's 100th goal for Real Madrid, making him the 24th player to reach that mark for the club. They were his 10th and 11th league goals this season after his double against Sevilla, and according to BBC Sport he now has eight goals in seven Clásico appearances.

Madrid won without the suspended Vinícius Júnior and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was ill. Lunin, making his first club appearance of the season, also made three first-half saves from Anthony Gordon. Barcelona had 62% of the ball and 18 shots to Madrid's 10.

What's next

Barcelona host Alavés on Saturday and Aston Villa in the Champions League on Tuesday 3 November, before visiting Atlético on 8 November. Real Madrid travel to Racing Santander on Sunday and to AEK Athens in the Champions League on Wednesday 4 November.
