How the match unfolded
Bologna went ahead in the eighth minute. Zortea broke down the right and set up Mbangula, who timed his run into the area and beat Maignan.
Milan were level six minutes later. Hutchinson pressed Theate, blocked his clearance and immediately squared the ball for an unmarked Cisse to score.
Cisse struck again in the 27th minute. Hutchinson's run was stopped at the edge of the area, but Tomori reached the loose ball first on the right and crossed to the far post, where Cisse tapped in. The goal stood after a brief check for offside, and Milan led 2-1 at the break.
Tomori, who was hurt in the first half, did not come out after the break and was replaced by Luka Modrić. Bologna made changes on the hour, and substitute Miranda had an immediate impact. In the 60th minute his free kick from the left flicked off Davide Bartesaghi and went in at the far post for an own goal.
Two minutes later Bologna were in front. Miranda got down the left and pulled the ball back, and Mbangula got away from Diawara with his first touch before beating Maignan.
Milan pushed for an equaliser, but Bologna settled the game in the 86th minute. Odgaard beat the offside trap on the break and rolled the ball across for Mbangula to complete his hat-trick. Skorupski then made a diving save to keep out a Christian Pulisic header in the 89th minute.
What does it mean for Milan and Bologna?
Milan stay on 18 points after nine games, and the result ends a run of back-to-back league wins that included the 3-2 home victory over Atalanta. It is also their first home league defeat to Bologna since January 2016. Amorim now has a concern over Tomori ahead of Saturday's derby against an Inter side that beat Venezia 2-0 on Wednesday and have also won late against Fiorentina.
Bologna move up to 11 points with a third straight away league win under Palladino, after victories at Lecce and Cagliari. Elsewhere in the round, Como won 3-1 at Torino on Tuesday. More reports are in our Serie A section.
