How the match unfolded
Inter dominated the first half, but David de Gea kept them out. The Fiorentina goalkeeper saved from Nicolò Barella early on, twice denied Thuram and pushed away a header from Francesco Pio Esposito, and the sides went in level at the break.
De Gea stopped Thuram again before the hour. Fiorentina had already lost Marin Pongračić to injury, with Viery coming on, and Jiménez needed treatment on the hour. He stayed on and, in the 65th minute, struck a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top corner after a pass from Nicolò Fagioli. Cristian Chivu had sent on Ange-Yoan Bonny for Esposito a minute earlier.
Inter pressed for an equaliser and De Gea saved from Bonny, then kept out a Thuram header, Viery was booked, and Carlos Augusto hit the woodwork twice with headers in the space of two minutes, the first from a Hakan Çalhanoğlu set piece.
Chivu made a triple change in the 78th minute, bringing on Zieliński, Petar Sučić and Federico Dimarco, and Ivan Provedel saved from Fiorentina substitute Wilfried Gnonto at the other end. De Gea pushed away a Sučić shot a minute from time, but he was finally beaten in the first minute of stoppage time, when Thuram exchanged passes with Andy Diouf and placed a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Four minutes later Víctor Valdepeñas was penalised for holding Thuram in the box. Zieliński sent the spot-kick into the top corner for his side's first lead of the match.
What it means
Inter are unbeaten after eight Serie A games, with seven wins and a draw, and have won all five of their home league matches this season. Their 22 points put them back level with Lazio at the top, ahead on goal difference, according to BBC Sport's table. Lazio first drew level with Inter after a 3-0 win at Juventus last weekend, while third-placed Roma drew 3-3 at Napoli on Saturday.
Fiorentina are 18th with four points and have lost three league games in a row, the previous one 3-1 at home to Como. Paolo Vanoli's side face a quick chance to respond when Atalanta visit the Artemio Franchi on Thursday, while Inter travel to Venezia the night before.
