How the match unfolded
Villa were punished for a mistake inside seven minutes. Playing out from the back, João Gomes passed straight to Lamine Yamal in the box, and the Barcelona winger curled a finish into the corner.
Villa had a good spell after that. Matty Cash and Victor Lindelöf had shots deflected behind from corners, João Cancelo blocked a Gomes effort, and Johan Manzambi dragged a good chance wide after Nicolas Jackson broke down the right. Barcelona still led 1-0 at the break.
Seven minutes into the second half, Fermín López found Raphinha on the edge of the area. His low shot took a touch off Pau Torres and beat Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. On 64 minutes Cancelo got past John McGinn on the left and picked out Raphinha with a cross from the outside of his boot, and the Brazilian finished from six yards.
Suzuki stopped the score getting bigger by saving from Anthony Gordon. Leon Goretzka headed against the post as Villa chased a consolation goal.
What does the result mean in the table?
Both clubs now have nine points from four games. Barcelona moved above Villa into second place in the league phase table, three points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain. It was also Barcelona's first Champions League clean sheet since April 2025, and a good response to their previous European game, a defeat by PSG.
Raphinha now has 19 goals in all competitions this season, according to theScore. For Unai Emery's Villa, the defeat ends a run of three straight wins in the competition.
