Spain extend World Cup–winning coach Luis de la Fuente until 2032

Spain’s football federation has extended World Cup–winning coach Luis de la Fuente until 2032 after a unanimous vote by the RFEF board of directors on Monday, 21 September 2026.

The board, chaired by president Rafael Louzán and meeting at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas, approved expanding de la Fuente’s contract so he remains linked to the Real Federación Española de Fútbol through 2032. The RFEF said the decision followed Spain’s FIFA World Cup 2026 title and frames a multi-year competitive cycle covering UEFA Euro 2028, the 2030 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2032. Spain will co-host the 2030 World Cup with Portugal, Morocco, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.

According to Reuters, the new deal is a six-year extension and is the longest tenure ever approved for a Spain head coach. RTVE reported that the previous contract ran to 2028; Monday’s approval prolongs that horizon through the next European Championship after the home World Cup.

Louzán: stability and trust

Louzán told the board the federation was seeking “a project of stability and trust,” based on confidence in de la Fuente and the sporting project he leads across several important competitions. He described de la Fuente as the most decorated Spain head coach in history after fourteen years inside the federation, and said a long future at the RFEF was something the coach deserved.

A presentation act followed the same day at Campo A of the Ciudad del Fútbol, with Louzán and de la Fuente formalising the renewal in front of Spanish football representatives. Louzán said de la Fuente was “exceptional” and a reference for Spanish society, and that the project should continue on the path that had brought success.

De la Fuente said Spain must keep improving and competing to win, with the conviction that the best was still ahead. RTVE quoted him saying the team was not content with what it had already achieved and that there were still good things left to enjoy.

Titles and next fixtures

Since taking the senior job in December 2022, de la Fuente has led Spain to the 2023 UEFA Nations League, UEFA Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup. The RFEF’s renewal presentation noted that Spain’s second World Cup title came on 19 July 2026 in New Jersey against Argentina, in what it described as de la Fuente’s 50th match in charge of the senior side. Reuters also noted Spain’s 38-match unbeaten run in official matches.

The immediate calendar includes the UEFA Nations League group phase, with Spain facing England, Croatia and the Czech Republic in late September and early October, as set out by the RFEF.

BetAlert reports the federation confirmation and attributed secondary context only. No salary figures are included: the RFEF’s primary announcements do not state terms of pay.
