Palmer, Rice and three others withdraw from England Nations League squad

England have lost five players from Thomas Tuchel’s Nations League squad, with Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Tino Livramento withdrawing on Monday, 21 September 2026. Everton midfielder James Garner and Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White have been called up as replacements and will join the camp on Tuesday, according to England Football and BBC Sport.

England Football’s senior squad page lists Garner and Gibbs-White among the midfielders and notes both were called up after the five withdrawals. BBC Sport reported that the pair will report to St George’s Park on Tuesday.

Palmer had been recalled by Tuchel after missing England’s FIFA World Cup squad. BBC Sport said he has withdrawn with a minor injury after playing the full match for Chelsea in Friday’s 3-0 Premier League defeat at Brentford. The federation and BBC Sport do not provide a further medical diagnosis or return timeline beyond that description.

Mainoo and Rashford were assessed by Manchester United after being taken off late in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham, BBC Sport reported. Rice played the full game for Arsenal in Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion and is also unavailable. Livramento has been limited to three substitute appearances for Newcastle United this season, according to the same BBC reporting.

Nations League fixtures

England open the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League campaign against world champions Spain at a sold-out Wembley Stadium on Saturday, 26 September (19:45). They then travel to Prague to face Czechia on Tuesday, 29 September (19:45), meet Croatia in Rijeka on Saturday, 3 October (17:00), and host Czechia again at Wembley on Tuesday, 6 October (19:45), as set out by England Football.

Tuchel originally named a large senior group for the four-match window. The updated England Football squad listing includes Garner (Everton) and Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest) after the Monday withdrawals. BBC Sport noted that Tuchel had said on Friday that Gibbs-White was close to inclusion in the initial squad, and that Garner, like Gibbs-White, was not selected for the 2026 World Cup.

BBC Sport also noted Palmer’s club form after his World Cup omission: he had started six of Chelsea’s seven games and played the full 90 minutes in five of them before the Brentford defeat, scoring four goals and providing two assists in that run. Those figures describe his club minutes and output; they are not a medical prognosis.

BetAlert will not speculate on how long any of the five players will be unavailable. Official availability for club or country beyond the withdrawals and call-ups listed above has not been detailed in the England Football update or the BBC Sport reports cited here.
