Real Madrid diagnose Mbappé left-knee hyperextension after France camp exit

Kylian Mbappé has left the France Nations League squad and returned to Madrid after the French Football Federation confirmed a knee tendon injury suffered while scoring the winner against Türkiye on Friday. Real Madrid’s medical services have since diagnosed a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee.

The Real Madrid forward is unavailable for France’s three remaining fixtures in this international window: away to Belgium on Monday 28 September, then Italy and Belgium again at the Stade de France early in October.

What France confirmed

Shortly after France’s 1–0 win in Kocaeli — Mbappé’s goal and early exit on Zinédine Zidane’s debut — the French federation said the captain had suffered a knee tendon injury (“lésion tendineuse”) and would miss the rest of the camp. France staff told franceinfo that Mbappé was leaving the gathering to continue treatment in Madrid with Real Madrid.

Mbappé scored in the 54th minute from Michael Olise’s pass, then needed treatment and briefly returned before being substituted. Désiré Doué replaced him as France closed out the Group 1 opener.

Real Madrid diagnosis

On 26 September, Real Madrid published a medical report after tests by the club’s medical services. The club said Mbappé “has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee,” adding that doctors are “awaiting evolution.”

That club wording aligns with Zinédine Zidane’s post-match comments to TF1, when the France coach described a hyperextension of the knee on the shot and swelling and said France would not take risks. No official return-to-play timetable has been issued beyond the confirmed withdrawal from this Nations League camp. BetAlert will not speculate on how long the absence will last.

What happens next

France travel to face Belgium on Monday without their captain and all-time top scorer. The same window still includes Italy and a second Belgium fixture in Paris. Real Madrid’s next league fixture is at home to Villarreal on 10 October; further club or federation updates will clarify when Mbappé can resume training.

The withdrawal deepens France’s injury list in this break after Real Madrid diagnosed Ibrahima Konaté with a collateral ligament injury and Leny Yoro was called up. For a parallel early departure from another Nations League camp this week, see Germany’s Havertz and Musiala diagnoses.
