Germany confirm Havertz muscle strain and Musiala thigh tear; Wirtz and Burkardt join early

The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed that Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala will leave the national-team camp early on Friday after diagnoses from Thursday’s UEFA Nations League opener against the Netherlands, with Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt joining the squad sooner than planned.

What the DFB diagnosed

According to the DFB’s Nations League ticker dated 25 September 2026, Arsenal forward Havertz suffered a muscle strain (Muskelzerrung) during Germany’s 1–1 draw in Amsterdam and was substituted in the 30th minute. Bayern Munich playmaker Musiala sustained a muscle fibre tear in his right thigh (Muskelfaserriss im rechten Oberschenkel) during the pre-match warm-up; Thursday-evening examinations confirmed that finding.

Both players leave camp on Friday after the squad’s return from Amsterdam. The DFB has not published a return-to-play timeline beyond the early departures and the early call-ups ahead of Sunday’s home fixture. BR24, reporting the same DFB diagnoses on Friday morning, said both are unavailable for the remainder of this international break.

Impact on Germany’s Nations League plans

The absences land on Jürgen Klopp’s second competitive night in charge. After Cody Gakpo’s late equaliser left the Netherlands and Germany sharing the points on Thursday, Germany host Greece in Augsburg on Sunday (20:45).

Wirtz (Liverpool) and Burkardt (Eintracht Frankfurt) had been due to arrive on Sunday with the second squad for games three and four of this unusually long window. The DFB says they will now join earlier and may be available to Klopp for the Greece match.

What happens next

Germany’s immediate focus is Sunday’s Nations League home game against Greece in Augsburg, followed later in the window by Serbia in Munich and the return fixture in Thessaloniki. Havertz returns to Arsenal and Musiala to Bayern Munich for further club medical work.

The dual withdrawal continues a busy injury theme across this international break — including France’s defensive reshuffle after Ibrahima Konaté’s collateral ligament diagnosis.
