Manchester City Beat Sunderland 5-3 in Eight-Goal Premier League Thriller

Manchester City against Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League

Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a dramatic 5-3 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The eight-goal contest produced repeated swings in momentum, with Sunderland refusing to allow City to take control despite falling behind several times. Brian Brobbey scored a remarkable hat-trick for the visitors, but City's attacking quality ultimately proved decisive.

City Strike Early, Sunderland Respond

Manchester City opened the scoring after just nine minutes through Enzo Fernández, who registered his first goal for the club.

The advantage did not last long.

Only three minutes later, Brian Brobbey found the net for Sunderland to make it 1-1 and immediately bring the visitors back into the contest.

City regained the lead in the 29th minute when Rayan Cherki scored to make it 2-1. Once again, however, Sunderland produced an immediate response.

Brobbey struck his second goal four minutes later, levelling the match at 2-2 and turning the first half into an increasingly unpredictable contest.

With half-time approaching, Antoine Semenyo delivered another breakthrough for City.

The forward scored in the 43rd minute to send Manchester City into the interval with a 3-2 advantage.

Semenyo Makes the Difference

Semenyo continued his influence after the restart.

In the 57th minute, he scored his second goal of the afternoon to extend City's advantage to 4-2 and give the home side some breathing room.

But Sunderland were not finished.

Just two minutes later, Brobbey completed his hat-trick, reducing the deficit to 4-3 and ensuring that the match remained open.

His three goals represented an outstanding individual performance against the Premier League leaders, even though Sunderland were ultimately unable to complete the comeback.

Haaland Seals the Victory

With Sunderland still within one goal, Manchester City needed another breakthrough to remove the danger of a late equaliser.

That goal arrived in the 81st minute.

Erling Haaland converted a cross from Joško Gvardiol to make it 5-3. The goal was confirmed following a VAR intervention and effectively secured all three points for City.

Haaland's strike also produced a notable personal milestone: he has now scored against all 25 Premier League opponents he has faced.

City saw out the remaining minutes to complete an extraordinary eight-goal afternoon at the Etihad.

Perfect League Start Continues

The victory means Manchester City have won all five of their opening Premier League matches this season.

They enter the international break three points clear at the top of the table and have also extended their winning run across all competitions to seven matches.

While the result underlined City's attacking strength, conceding three goals at home also highlighted areas that will require attention.

Sunderland managed to repeatedly respond after falling behind, and Brobbey caused significant problems for the City defence throughout the match.

For Sunderland, the final result will be disappointing, but scoring three times away against the league leaders demonstrated the threat they can pose.

For Manchester City, the most important outcome was another three points.

Five league matches, five victories, and a perfect Premier League record remains intact heading into the international break.
