Nick Woltemade's second-half penalty earned Juventus a 2-2 draw with Rennes in the Europa League on Thursday, before substitute Jhon Lucumí had a late winner ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Zeki Çelik gave Luciano Spalletti's side an early lead in Turin, but Musa Al-Taamari and a Boulaye Dia penalty put Franck Haise's team ahead by half-time.

How the match unfolded

Juventus, beaten 3-0 at home by Lazio in Serie A on Sunday, started quickly. Woltemade fired wide after a lay-off from Weston McKennie, and a minute later he released Çelik on a fast break. The full-back carried the ball into the box and beat Brice Samba with a right-footed shot across goal into the bottom left corner.

Guglielmo Vicario saved from Valentin Rongier before Rennes levelled in the 15th minute. Bryan Reynolds headed the ball back across goal and Al-Taamari finished from close range. Samba then made a diving save from Federico Gatti's header after a Teun Koopmeiners cross, and Gatti was booked soon afterwards.

Vicario kept out a shot from Rennes wing-back Nagida on the half-hour, but the visitors went ahead just before the break. Douglas Luiz was penalised for handball when he blocked a shot in the area, the decision stood after a VAR check, and Dia sent his penalty into the bottom right corner.

Pierre Kalulu replaced Çelik at half-time, and Vicario denied Al-Taamari early in the second half. Spalletti sent on Nico González for Gatti on the hour, and the switch paid off. González's header from a free-kick struck the arm of Reynolds, a VAR check upheld the penalty, and Woltemade sent Samba the wrong way with a shot down the middle.

Samba saved from Koopmeiners, Rennes defenders Anthony Rouault and Charlie Cresswell went close with headers, and a Woltemade header deflected wide off Cresswell. Lucumí and Jérémie Boga came on in the 80th minute, and Lucumí thought he had won it with a close-range finish in the 88th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. Eight minutes were added, and Cresswell blocked a final Woltemade shot.

What it means

The draw ends Juventus' winning start in the league phase after victories over NEC and Celta Vigo. They have seven points from three games, and Rennes have five. Woltemade has now scored in all three of Juventus' Europa League matches this season, while Dia followed up his late double against Auxerre with another goal.

Spalletti told Juventus' official website: "We did well today, and our tempo was good too; unfortunately, we conceded two goals we shouldn't have." Koopmeiners added: "I think we deserved to win in the second half."

Spalletti said Çelik "felt some tightness" and suggested he would struggle to recover for the weekend, Gazzetta reported.
