Brighton & Hove Albion beat Arsenal 3-0 at the American Express Stadium on Saturday, 19 September 2026, ending the defending champions’ perfect start to the Premier League season.

Pascal Groß opened the scoring in the 31st minute, Charalampos Kostoulas doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, and Chema Andrés headed a third in the 57th minute on his first league start. Arsenal’s official match report said the defeat ended a seven-game winning start and was their first league loss since April. BBC Sport reported that Brighton’s win also closed Arsenal’s nine-match Premier League winning streak.

Attendance was 31,944, according to Brighton’s club report and BBC Sport. The fixture fell on a day Brighton marked 125 years since their first professional match, with commemorative shirts noted in Arsenal’s account of the afternoon.

How Brighton took control

Brighton pressed high from the outset. David Raya tipped a Kostoulas strike wide early on before Groß broke the deadlock from the edge of the box, his shot going in off the post, as described by Arsenal.com and Sky Sports.

Arsenal’s clearest first-half chance came just before the interval when Martin Ødegaard’s effort was diverted into Bukayo Saka’s path, but Bart Verbruggen saved. From the resulting restart, Kostoulas drove low past Raya for 2-0.

Nine minutes into the second half, Groß swung in a corner and Andrés headed in at the far post for 3-0 — his first Brighton goal, according to the club. Kai Havertz later went through one-on-one but Verbruggen saved; substitute Matt O’Riley was denied by Raya at the other end as Brighton protected the clean sheet.

What the result meant

Post-match table figures published by BBC Sport placed Arsenal second on 12 points from five matches and Brighton third on 10 from five, with Manchester City top on 12 from four games ahead of their later fixture. Arsenal’s report also noted Brighton’s home wins against the reigning Premier League champions in each of the last three seasons.

Mikel Arteta told Sky Sports the result and performance were very disappointing and gave Brighton credit for intensity and first contacts, saying Arsenal were “extremely poor technically” in their own half when pressed. Fabian Hürzeler said beating the champions was special because of the performance and that his players were “horrible to play against” by doing the basics well.

Arsenal return to Premier League action after the international break at home to Leeds United on Saturday, 10 October, per Arsenal’s official report.
