FC Barcelona have confirmed that Andreas Christensen sustained a muscle injury to the rectus femoris of his left quadriceps and will miss the coming weeks.

In a medical update on Sunday, 20 September 2026, the club said tests confirmed the diagnosis after Christensen was forced off during Saturday’s La Liga win away to Sevilla. Barcelona’s Spanish-language bulletin, as reported by La Vanguardia, said he will be unavailable for the coming weeks and that his progress will determine when he returns. The club’s English medical note described a left thigh strain and likewise tied his return to how the injury evolves.

What happened

Christensen left the pitch in the 59th minute at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán and was replaced by Gerard Martín. Barcelona went on to win 3-1. After the match, head coach Hansi Flick told reporters it was a muscle injury and that Christensen would be out for several weeks pending further tests — comments that preceded Sunday’s confirmatory bulletin.

Barcelona said Christensen has made six appearances in 2026/27 so far, starting four matches, providing one assist and playing 402 minutes.

What Barcelona have confirmed

Confirmed: a left-quadriceps (rectus femoris) muscle injury, absence for the coming weeks, and availability depending on recovery. Barcelona have not published a fixed day-count for the layoff in the English medical note. Separate media estimates such as four to six weeks are reporting, not club confirmation.
