Real Madrid have confirmed that Fede Valverde has a grade-3 sprain of his left ankle.
In a medical report published on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, Real Madrid Medical Services said further tests showed “a grade 3 sprain in his left ankle,” with recovery “pending evolution.”
The update follows Sunday’s 2-1 La Liga derby defeat to Atlético Madrid, when the club first reported a “severe trauma” to the same ankle and said more tests would follow. Madrid has not given a return date or a fixed weeks-out timetable.
Valverde was injured during the derby. He had also been named in Uruguay’s squad under Diego Forlán for upcoming friendlies, but Tuesday’s club diagnosis leaves him out of that window, with reporting that Emiliano Martínez of Palmeiras was called up instead.
Until Real Madrid issue another medical update, his availability for club football after the international break remains open beyond the confirmed grade-3 diagnosis.
