Borussia Mönchengladbach have appointed Alexander Blessin as head coach.
The club confirmed the move on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, on its official website under the headline “Borussia verpflichtet Cheftrainer Alexander Blessin.” Blessin, 53, has signed a contract until 2028.
He replaces Eugen Polanski, who was dismissed earlier in September after only three league matchdays. Gladbach remain bottom of the Bundesliga without a point after four games and have conceded 16 goals — the club’s worst start to a season.
Sporting director Rouven Schröder had said after Saturday’s 3-4 home defeat to Mainz that the club already had a verbal agreement with a coach, without naming him. Tuesday’s club announcement makes the identity official. Blessin is due to be presented at a press conference at Borussia-Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Blessin most recently managed FC St. Pauli for two seasons. He left after the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga in 2026. Earlier head-coach roles include KV Oostende, Genoa and Union Saint-Gilloise, after beginning his coaching path in RB Leipzig’s youth setup.
His first league task with Gladbach comes after the international break: the Rhine derby away at 1. FC Köln.
