How the match unfolded
Roberto De Zerbi's Spurs started on the front foot and pressed United high. In the third minute Solanke, captain for the day, was denied by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, and Conor Gallagher was booked a minute later.
The visitors kept coming. Lucas Bergvall fired high and wide in the 17th minute, and Mohammed Kudus dragged a shot just wide four minutes later. United's best moment of the half came in the 34th minute, when Antonín Kinsky saved from Amad Diallo. Lammens then stopped Gallagher from close range in the 42nd minute, and the hosts were booed off at half-time.
Solanke fired over from Sávio's cross in the 51st minute. Carrick made a triple change just before the hour, sending on Joshua Zirkzee, Diogo Dalot and Carlos Baleba for Amad, Leny Yoro and Youri Tielemans, and United improved. Bruno Fernandes shot narrowly wide in the 63rd minute, and De Zerbi replied by bringing on Bentancur and Omar Marmoush.
United went ahead in the 73rd minute. Matheus Cunha drove into the box from the left and set up Mbeumo, who fired a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
Five minutes later, Spurs were down to 10. Bentancur, only 12 minutes after coming on, flew into a challenge on Luke Shaw, Shaw reacted angrily, and the Uruguayan appeared to move his head into the United defender. Referee Stuart Attwell showed Bentancur a straight red card for violent conduct. Shaw was booked, as was Spurs defender Jan Paul van Hecke.
United looked set to see the game out. Kinsky saved from Mbeumo in the 86th minute, and Harry Maguire headed wide from the resulting corner. But eight minutes of stoppage time were added, and two minutes into them Sandro Tonali crossed and Solanke, tussling with Lisandro Martínez, headed into the bottom right corner. Kinsky also saved a Maguire shot from distance as United pushed for a winner.
What the draw means
The point lifts Tottenham off the bottom of the table. De Zerbi's side are 18th with three points from six games, and are still waiting for their first league win of the season.
United have six points from six games and sit 12th, with only one league win so far this season.
What comes next
United travel to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday (20:00 UK), then visit Leeds in the Premier League next Sunday. Tottenham, who have no midweek fixture, are at home to Coventry City on Monday 19 October (20:00 UK). Bentancur's red card for violent conduct would normally bring a three-match ban.
