Merseyside Police say 10 people were arrested and a police officer suffered a serious facial injury around Sunday's Liverpool v Manchester City match at Anfield, which City won 3-0 in their first game since an independent commission found them guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules.
The force gave the figures on Monday morning and said its inquiries into the incidents were continuing.
What the police said
According to Merseyside Police, the officer was hurt at around 6.35pm on Anfield Road, as fans were leaving the stadium, while arresting a man. The officer was treated in hospital and is now recovering at home. Officers are speaking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV and phone footage.
The 10 arrests were:
- five on suspicion of tragedy chanting, under Section 5 of the Public Order Act, made before and during the match
- two for affray
- one man on suspicion of two offences of assaulting a constable
- one on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and assault
- one on suspicion of throwing items onto the pitch
Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin said it was "extremely disappointing that an officer has sustained a serious injury" while on duty, adding that "enquiries into the full circumstances are ongoing so that anyone responsible for criminality can be brought to justice."
Tragedy chanting condemned
Hobin was blunt about the chanting arrests. "The tragic loss of life should never be a subject for tribal point scoring," she said, and warned that anyone involved "risks ending up in custody and getting a criminal record." She also stressed that the overwhelming majority of the 60,000 fans present behaved well.
A charged afternoon
The fixture came with tension already high. Home supporters jeered City throughout, after the commission upheld most of the Premier League's long-running financial charges against the club. City deny wrongdoing and lodged an appeal on 1 October.
On the pitch, Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored after Ryan Gravenberch's red card, keeping Enzo Maresca's side perfect at the top of the table. City host Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday before facing Ipswich in the Premier League on Saturday.
