Dominic Calvert-Lewin's equaliser six minutes after half-time earned Leeds United a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Elland Road on Sunday, cancelling out Bryan Mbeumo's first-half opener. The point leaves Michael Carrick's side with one win from seven Premier League games.

How the match unfolded

United arrived after a difficult week that included a 2-0 Champions League defeat at Atlético Madrid and a fine for Lisandro Martínez after he criticised the club's hierarchy. Martínez started, while Leeds were unchanged from the side beaten 2-1 at Arsenal.

A fiery opening produced more bookings than shots. Bruno Fernandes was cautioned in the 17th minute for a late challenge on Tarik Muharemović, and Gabriel Gudmundsson followed two minutes later for a foul on Andrey Santos.

Senne Lammens made the first save of the game, keeping out Nico Elvedi's header from an Anton Stach delivery. At the other end Mbeumo headed wide when unmarked from Youri Tielemans' cross, and James Trafford raced well out of his area to cut out a through ball meant for Amad Diallo.

Mbeumo made amends in the 35th minute, getting in front of James Justin at the near post to finish Tielemans' low cross.

Martínez, who had picked up an injury, did not return for the second half and was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui. Leeds levelled in the 51st minute: Mazraoui headed Jayden Bogle's cross behind, Stach's corner was flicked on by Muharemović, and Calvert-Lewin beat Mbeumo to the ball to finish past Lammens.

Leeds pressed for a winner. Ao Tanaka volleyed over, and Ethan Ampadu felt he had been pulled down by Harry Maguire in a goalmouth scramble, but referee Darren England let play continue. Fernandes dragged a shot wide for United, and Stach fired another volley over before Lukas Nmecha replaced Noah Okafor and Mason Mount came on for Carlos Baleba in the 74th minute.

In stoppage time Stach's close-range effort was blocked before Lammens gathered. Ampadu was then booked for a foul on Santos, who was also cautioned for his reaction.

Pressure stays on Carrick

United have now gone six games without a win in all competitions for the first time since the end of the 2018-19 season, BBC Sport reported, and their only league win came in August. At full time they were 13th on seven points, three behind seventh-placed Leeds.

Leeds had 61% of the ball and five shots on target to United's three, and remain unbeaten at home in all competitions since March. Daniel Farke felt they deserved more. "We should have won the game but we move on," the Leeds boss told Sky Sports, adding that his side "lacked quality in and around the box".

What's next

United visit Como in the Champions League on Wednesday before hosting Bournemouth at Old Trafford next Sunday (14:00 UK). Leeds travel to Sunderland later that afternoon (16:30 UK).
