Alexander Isak leaves Sweden camp with minor injury; returns to Liverpool

Alexander Isak has left Sweden’s Nations League camp with a minor injury and will return to Liverpool for assessment, the Swedish Football Association and Liverpool confirmed on Sunday.

The striker will miss Sweden’s three remaining fixtures in this international window, starting with Monday’s home match against Poland at Strawberry Arena. Burnley centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal has also left the camp with a minor injury. No replacements have been called up for now.

What Sweden and Liverpool confirmed

Svenska Fotbollförbundet said Isak and Ekdal were ending the gathering because of injuries of a mild nature that mean they will not be available for the forthcoming Nations League matches. Both players will continue rehabilitation in consultation with their clubs.

Liverpool said Isak is returning from international duty due to a minor injury and will be assessed by club medical staff at the AXA Training Centre. Neither Sweden nor Liverpool published a detailed diagnosis or a return-to-play timetable.

Potter on the issue

At Sunday’s press conference, Sweden coach Graham Potter said Isak has a small problem with his thigh that arose during the Romania game. “Sometimes you take a few knocks and 24–48 hours later you realise it was worse than you thought during the match,” Potter said, according to SVT Sport. He added that Sweden’s medical staff had been in contact with Liverpool, but that the decision to send Isak home was ultimately Sweden’s.

Victor Nilsson Lindelöf told SVT that injuries in the squad were not ideal and described Isak as an important player for Sweden.

What happens next

Sweden face Poland without Isak on Monday. The same Nations League window still includes Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania. Liverpool’s Premier League season resumes when Manchester City visit Anfield on Sunday 11 October.

No official recovery timeline has been issued by SvFF or Liverpool. BetAlert will not speculate beyond the confirmed withdrawal from this camp and the club’s assessment at the AXA Training Centre.
