Coventry vs Newcastle: Lampard's Sky Blues seek rare double after Forest win

Coventry City host Newcastle United on Monday night looking to back up their first Premier League win in more than 25 years, while Matthias Jaissle's Magpies chase a result that would strengthen a solid start after a disruptive summer.

Kick-off is 20:00 UK at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Coventry sit on three points from five league games after beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 before the international break; Newcastle have eight points from five after beating Hull City 2-1 at St James' Park.

Why the fixture matters

Coventry opened the season with four straight league defeats without a goal, including heavy home losses to Hull and Brighton, before Jay Dasilva's winner at the City Ground ended a 25-year wait for a Premier League victory. BBC Sport notes they are attempting to become the first English side in 127 years to win consecutive top-flight games immediately after losing their opening four without scoring — a feat last managed by Derby County in 1899.

Newcastle have already faced promoted opposition once this month, holding off Hull after a high-tempo first half. Jaissle's side have drawn with Liverpool and Bournemouth, beaten Tottenham and Hull, and lost 4-1 at Leeds. Eight points from five games is a respectable return after selling three of their highest-profile players in the summer, even though BBC Sport flagged a league-high 97 shots faced across those five matches.

The clubs have not met in the Premier League since February 2010. Newcastle have won both league meetings this century, including a 3-1 home win in January 2001 — their last top-flight trip to Coventry territory by another name.

Team news

Frank Lampard told BBC Sport that Milan van Ewijk and Kaine Kesler-Hayden have returned to training and that there are no fresh injury concerns among players back from international duty. Josh Eccles "will still be a few more weeks potentially", while Haji Wright and Luke Woolfenden need longer. Taiwo Awoniyi serves the final match of his three-game suspension after a red card against Brighton, according to club and local reporting.

On the Newcastle side, Jaissle said on the club website that Joelinton is back training and that the Magpies hope to have three or four of the nine players who missed the Hull game available. Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen is out for two months with a hamstring injury. Jaissle stressed careful load management for returning players and said Coventry "have the quality" and "momentum" after their Forest win.

What happens next

A home win would give Coventry consecutive Premier League victories for the first time in a generation and lift them clear of the bottom places before home games against Fulham and Sunderland. For Newcastle, three points would push them toward the top half under Jaissle and set up Saturday's home meeting with Aston Villa at St James' Park (16:30 UK).

John Brooks referees, with Constantine Hatzidakis on VAR, as confirmed by Newcastle United.
