Bournemouth beat 10-man AC Milan 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday night to make it three wins from three in their first European campaign. Justin Kluivert and Marcus Tavernier scored first-half penalties, the second after Milan captain Mike Maignan was sent off for pushing Tyler Adams in the face, and substitute Amine Adli curled in a late free-kick. Ruben Amorim's side did not manage a shot on target on his first return to England since leaving Manchester United.

How the match unfolded

Bournemouth started on the front foot in torrential rain. In the third minute Kluivert missed an Evanilson cross and Ben Gannon-Doak's shot was blocked, and moments later Evanilson glanced a header wide. The ball had struck the raised arm of Koni De Winter, and after a VAR review the referee awarded a penalty. In the eighth minute Kluivert waited for Maignan to move and rolled his right-footed kick into the other corner. His father, Patrick, scored the winner for Ajax against Milan in the 1995 Champions League final.

Maignan saved from Ryan Christie and Evanilson as the hosts kept pressing, then had to scramble a low James Hill shot round the post. At the resulting corner, in the 28th minute, he pushed both hands into Adams' face. He was shown a straight red card, a VAR check confirmed it, and Bournemouth were also given a second penalty.

Milan sent on reserve goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani before anyone had gone off, and he was ordered back until Omari Hutchinson made way in the 32nd minute. Tavernier took this one and sent Torriani the wrong way with his left foot.

Amorim replaced Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Pervis Estupiñán with Adrien Rabiot and Davide Bartesaghi at the break, but Bournemouth kept coming. Kluivert whipped a short corner just wide of the far post, and Marco Rose sent on Lewis Cook, Rayan and Alex Tóth for Adams, Tavernier and Kluivert in the 62nd minute. Rayan soon headed over from a Gannon-Doak cross.

Tóth went off injured in the 77th minute, and his replacement made it 3-0. In the 84th minute Adli curled a left-footed free-kick through a gap in the Milan wall and into the bottom corner. Late on, Torriani denied Rayan with a superb save as the forward tried to curl the ball into the far corner.

What it means

Bournemouth are third in the table with nine points, level with leaders Benfica and second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, after their 2-1 win at Real Sociedad and 3-0 home win over Sturm Graz. According to ESPN, they are the first English side to win their first three European games of a campaign since 1973. The result also follows their first Premier League win of the season, against 10-man Sunderland.

Milan, who arrived after a 3-2 Serie A win over Atalanta and a 4-0 win at Salzburg, are 24th with three points after a second defeat in three games. Maignan will miss the home game against Ferencváros. BBC Sport reported that some Milan staff reacted angrily to Bournemouth's celebrations at full time, with Rose also arguing with members of Amorim's staff.
