Arsenal vs Lille team news: Hincapié and Zubimendi out of Champions League clash

Arsenal defender Gabriel, wearing the number 6 navy-and-red Arsenal training top, talks with two team-mates during a training session at the Sobha Realty Training Centre.

Arsenal host Lille at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night (20:00 UK) without Piero Hincapié and Martín Zubimendi, as Mikel Arteta's side look to make it two wins from two in the Champions League league phase. It is the first meeting between the clubs.

Both Arsenal players hurt their ankles in a small-sided session on the Emirates pitch after Saturday's 2-1 win over Leeds United. Lille are also short at the back after losing right-back Tiago Santos to a serious knee injury.

"They're both going to miss tomorrow's match, that's for sure," Arteta said at his pre-match news conference on Monday. He added that both players were having further scans and that Hincapié's injury "looks a little bit more serious". Our earlier report explains how Hincapié and Zubimendi were injured and why Arteta defended the session.

William Saliba is still out with a back problem. He has been training on the grass for just over a week, but Arteta said: "We're still talking about weeks." Christos Tzolis also misses out with a muscle injury that Arteta expects to keep him out for a few weeks.

Lille team news

Davide Ancelotti said on Monday that every player was available except the injured Santos, Ethan Mbappé and Hamza Igamane. Santos suffered a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, along with meniscus damage, in Saturday's 1-0 win over Le Havre. Lille have asked the French authorities to review how the tackle was refereed. Read more on the Tiago Santos injury and Lille's complaint.

Mbappé is also suspended. He serves the first match of a three-game UEFA ban for his red card in Lille's 3-2 home defeat by Real Betis on Matchday 1. Former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud is in the 23-man travelling squad.

Form and context

Arsenal opened with a 1-0 win at Napoli, settled by Martin Ødegaard's 75th-minute strike. That result extended their run of Champions League group and league-phase wins to 13. They are second in the Premier League with 15 points from six games, three behind Manchester City. Riccardo Calafiori and Bruno Guimarães scored as they came from behind to beat Leeds, in their first game since a 3-0 defeat at Brighton before the international break.

Lille have 13 points, one behind Ligue 1 leaders Monaco, after Dilane Bakwa's early goal beat Le Havre.

Gabriel faces his former club. The defender made 39 appearances for Lille before joining Arsenal in 2020. "I have a lot of love for LOSC," he told Arsenal's website.

What the coaches said

Arteta, whose side lost last season's final on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain, called Lille "a really tough opponent". "They are very, very well coached," he said. "What Davide has done is, I think, remarkable."

Ancelotti said Lille would arrive "with a lot of humility, of course, but also the desire to unsettle" Arsenal. They must respect Arsenal's qualities, he added, "without losing our identity".
